Former Fanling Magistracy / HKFYG Leadership Institute

Having been revitalised under the “Batch III of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme”, the Former Fanling Magistracy building (FM) was adaptively reused to house the HKFYG Leadership Institute. The FM building was the first district court established in the New Territories. Opened in 1961, it is a representative example of civic architecture from that period, featuring neoclassical motifs on the sides of the building and a double-canopied projecting bay. Notable interior features include a central skylight that keeps the court well-illuminated, as well as an elegant grand staircase with iron balustrades.

The FM building has been the filming location of countless legal dramas. Visitors can participate in guided tours to explore the building and its retained historical aspects, and to fully experience the blend of modernity and history, as well as how it currently operates for youth leadership training. Architect Rick Lam will share the design concept and how it seeks to balance the solemnity of the Institute with the youthful energy and optimism of the students.
