Kowloon City Municipal Services Building

The Kowloon City Municipal Building, designed by Palmer and Turner, was completed in 1988 and is situated adjacent to the former site of the Kowloon Walled City. It is a typical example of the "Municipal Services Building" (MSB) architectural style, which emerged in Hong Kong in the 1970s in response to the high-density living conditions.

The upper levels of the building feature a sports hall illuminated by skylights and a cooked food center with large windows. The brightly colored, exposed pipes are a prominent feature of the interior. Above the main entrance, a trapezoidal open corridor, decorated with hanging plants, serves as the central axis connecting the two wings of the building. The open design fosters a welcoming atmosphere for citizens, making the space accessible to all, regardless of age or socioeconomic status.

However, in 2022, the Urban Renewal Authority announced that the Kowloon City Municipal Building is slated for demolition. Take this opportunity to join our guided tour, where we will explore the significance of this building and deepen our understanding of municipal buildings in Hong Kong.
