BUILT IN
2025

Positioning itself as an urban connector, East Kowloon Cultural Centre connects seamlessly with the surrounding transportation nodes to form an Art Link, allowing commuters to navigate through the space to various parts of the neighborhood. The open layout enhances urban walkability and blurs the boundaries of traditional performance venues, functioning as a practical bridge connecting art with daily life.

Situated on a triangular site adjacent to Kowloon Bay Station, the architecture occupies the former site of Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate, Hong Kong’s last urban resettlement estate. Its design not only fosters respect for the community’s heritage, but also advocates for urban sustainability. The two iconic Chinese banyan trees from the original estate preserved in the Plaza and the iron gate patterns incorporated on the facade’s sunshades exemplified how local memory is embedded into contemporary art space. Meanwhile, rooftop solar panels, photovoltaic glass skylights, and energy-efficient systems are also installed as a commitment to the city’s future.
