REVITALISED IN
2018

(B Hall, D Hall, E Hall, F Hall, and the Former Central Magistracy)

With a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century, the Tai Kwun site comprises some of the earliest structures built during the foundation of Hong Kong. Through the generations, the site has constantly evolved with the development of Hong Kong.

The exhibition in Victoria Prison B Hall & D Hall is a search of the cultural significance of the former prison as an iconic heritage site in Hong Kong. B Hall intends to create multiple interpretations of the former colonial prison. D Hall, which used to be part of the prison hospital complex, intends to explore the traumatic and healing aspects of prison as a social system.

Greeted by the sunset colours, visitors are lured to explore the holding cells of the Central Magistracy. Through the then-passage of the accused, one can look up to the courtroom, whose space is defined with reference to the spatial structure of the original 20th-century courtroom. While respecting the original architectural fabric, the new insertions translate these into contemporary fashion adapted to fit the current.
