BUILT IN
1935

Haw Par Mansion was constructed in 1935 as the private residence of the Aw family, and is now designated as a Grade I historic building in Hong Kong. Personally designed by Aw Boon Haw, the villa represents a distinctive synthesis of Chinese and Western design theories to create a unique Renaissance aesthetic. The site not only bears witness to the lifestyle and culture of Hong Kong’s Chinese community in the post-war era, but also displays Aw’s rich and eclectic aesthetic taste as an overseas Chinese merchant. The mansion’s interior is adorned with multicultural elements, including Italian-coated glass windows, wall carvings reflecting Burmese and Indian Buddhist influences, and wooden sculptures depicting classical Chinese narratives. At present, Haw Par Mansion is being revitalised under the stewardship of the Foundation of Art and Cultural, transforming the residence into a non-profit arts space that fosters cultural exchange and dialogue.
