Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, Bridges Street Centre

The Bridges Street Centre, one of the service units of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong and formerly known as the Central Building, was built in 1918 as the organisation’s first self-financed premises. At the time, the building was well equipped with modern facilities, including Hong Kong’s first indoor swimming pool, an indoor sports ground, an overhead jogging track, an assembly hall, a fitness room, a canteen, and a hostel. It served as the headquarters of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong until 1966.

In recognition of its historical and architectural significance, the Bridges Street Centre was accorded Grade I status by the Antiquities Advisory Board in 2009. On 20 October 2023, the Government gazetted a notice declaring the Bridges Street Centre of the YMCA in Sheung Wan a monument.
