Ronald Lu & Partners (RLP Asia) provided pro bono professional design services for the Food Angel Jockey Club Food Production Centre. Through three years of volunteer work, the design team gained an in-depth understanding of food recovery and processing issues, enabling the design to be tailored to the diverse needs of staff, volunteers, visitors and neighbourhood residents.
Conceived as a community kitchen, the new centre features a dedicated visitor path that allows guests to observe kitchen operations and gain awareness of food waste. The layout is tailored to its surroundings: noise-generating plant equipment is situated on the expressway side of the building, while offices and the visitor corridor face the adjacent village, complemented by an aluminium barrier, minimising disturbance to residents. Biophilic design is woven into the project: the rooftop garden embraces the “farm-to-table” ethos, while stepped terraces and shading louvres on the southeast façade mitigate direct sunlight, enhancing comfort while reducing carbon emissions.
