Jockey Club Home for Hospice

The "Jockey Club Home for Hospice," operated by the Hong Kong Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care, is located on A Kung Kok Shan Road in Sha Tin. Covering an area of 5,000 square meters, it was opened in 2016 and is a forward-thinking palliative care center that values the quality of life—both physical and spiritual—of terminally ill patients, allowing them to live the final moments of their lives with dignity. The facility is built against the mountains and features 30 independent suites. The architectural team has put great thought into the design, ensuring that it does not feel like a typical cold and serious medical institution.

The spacious lobby serves as a large living room and dining area, with sunlight streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a harmonious and tranquil environment for family and friends to gather. The garden outside the suites is filled with plants such as bauhinia, trumpet flowers, mint, and rosemary, providing visual and olfactory stimulation for patients and their families. When life comes to an end, the quiet room can host simple farewell ceremonies, with a skylight allowing a beam of sunlight to wash in, cleansing and comforting the pain of parting. The Jockey Club Home for Hospice won the "Theme Architecture Award - Inclusive Design" from the Hong Kong Institute of Architects in 2017.

This guided tour will help more citizens understand palliative care services, and we hope to share heartwarming stories encountered in the face of the pain of death with the visitors.
