Sci-fi Tuen Mun

When people think of Tuen Mun, what usually comes to mind is the Light Rail, local eateries, long highways, and the identity-defining "Tuen Mun Cow".

Yet there is a lesser-known, sci-fi side to this district.

Tai Hing Estate, completed in phases from 1977 onwards, was the second public housing estate built in the area. Six of its seven blocks adopt a distinctive cruciform design — wider at the base and tapering towards the top — which accommodates flats of varying sizes to suit households of different sizes, while allowing more daylight to reach the lower floors.

This striking form gives the estate a commanding presence and an uncanny, almost surreal atmosphere, making it a firm favourite among photography enthusiasts.

This photo walk begins at Tuen Mun MTR Station, with a first stop at the former KMB Tuen Mun Bus Assembly Plant beside the railway, before strolling on to Tai Hing Estate. Along the way, participants will explore the estate's architectural aesthetics and seek out the best angles to capture Tuen Mun's unique sci-fi character.
