Portland Street Rest Garden

In 2018, Design Trust organised the “Design Trust Futures Studio” initiative, gathering designer mentees and experts from various fields to explore ways to improve public spaces in Hong Kong. The initiative continued to collaborate with multiple government departments and organisations to innovate and refurbish four micro-parks. Portland Street Rest Garden opened in 1980, nestled between old buildings. The refurbishment of the gardens not only improved the surroundings of the garden, it also encouraged users to interact, allowing the garden to become a gathering space to mobilise the community. After refurbishment, the garden retained part of its original layout, combining new and old elements. Its interesting design and bright pink color tones bring out a modern air; the illumination facilities and seats were upgraded, while the new terrazzo benches turn the seating capacity from 16 to 80, increasing the versatility and capability of the space, giving it a new appearance.
