Yi Pei Square Playground

In 2018, Design Trust organised the “Design Trust Futures Studio” initiative, gathering designer mentees and experts from various fields to explore ways to improve public spaces in Hong Kong. The initiative continued to collaborate with multiple government departments and organisations to innovate and refurbish four micro-parks.

Yi Pei Square Playground was the first site completed under projects, located in the bustling neighbourhood of Tsuen Wan, surrounded by residential buildings and shops. Through site analysis, research, and public engagement, the design team identified a lack of play facilities for children, as well as insufficient seating areas at the existing site. The team therefore proposed the concept of creating a “Communal Living Room” divided into three zones to address the needs of different users. They also introduced vibrant colours and new facilities to the site, infusing energy into the neighbourhood and facilitating community interactions.

We will visit Yi Pei Square and nearby public spaces, compare how different designs bring about varied spatial experiences, and learn about the design process of Yi Pei Square Playground.
