Sitting Out Area Under Flyover in Hill Road

In 2018, Design Trust organised the “Design Trust Futures Studio” initiative, gathering designer mentees and experts from various fields to explore ways to improve public spaces in Hong Kong. The initiative continued to collaborate with multiple government departments and organisations to innovate and refurbish four micro-parks. The sitting-out area under Hill Road Flyover was reopened in December 2022 after renovations. Located in Belcher Point in the Central and Western District, the Hill Road Flyover was completed by 1981. As the sitting-out area is built alongside a slope, the vertical height of the area under the flyover was a main consideration in the design. The concept of “fun” was incorporated into the design. A number of hill-shaped animated lighting installations create a safe and comfortable environment; even when resting or having fun “under the bridge,” locals and users will have a refreshing new experience. Historically, residents in the area worked at the stone quarries nearby, or Hakka people who moved to Hong Kong from Huizhou. Elements of historical events of the Central and Western District are also cleverly inscribed into the design by the concept design team, blending the old with the new in the design of this open space and interactive area beneath the flyover.
