The Kowloon Methodist Church

The Kowloon Methodist Church was built in 1951. It was designed by London architects Mauger and May with local architect Szeto Wai. It served as a place of worship and a primary school. Nestled against the hillside, the church building is well-organised according to its forms and functions. The church is designed in a modernist style, incorporating various geometric elements into its design, in particular the triangular bell tower with a cross above, making it a distinctive feature of the church. Additionally, the floors, walls and staircases extensively use terrazzo, and the grand design of the altar is complemented by wooden carved grapevines and branches on either side, inlaid with rose gold foil (thick branches) and green gold foil (small branches). With large glass windows, natural light penetrates the sanctuary, creating a sacred and serene atmosphere.
