Heritage of Mei Ho House

The birth of Mei Ho House originated from the Shek Kip Mei Fire on Christmas night in 1953, constructed to rehouse nearly 58,000 victims who lost their homes in the disaster. As one of the first ‘H’-shaped Mark I resettlement blocks, it symbolises the beginning of Hong Kong's public housing policy and has witnessed changes in community development, living conditions, and cultural aspects.

Mei Ho House is now operated by the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association (HKYHA) and is a Grade II Historic Building. It is one of the projects under the first batch of the ‘Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme’. The project includes the YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel, the Mei Ho House Heritage V Centre, and the Mei Ho House Former Residents Network.
