Choi Hung Estate

What architecture stories are hidden behind the renowned rainbow wall in Choi Hung Estate? Choi Hung Estate, built between 1962 and 1964, was designed by Palmer & Turner (P&T), one of Hong Kong’s oldest architectural practices. Yet at the time of its completion in 1962, it was among the tallest in storey public housing developments in the world. The exterior may appear to be a “sealed fortress,” yet once you step inside, a whole different world of everyday life unfolds. Its planning approach echoed the “Radiant City” ideals of international modernism, yet was distinctly adapted to Hong Kong’s unique conditions — extreme density, subtropical climate, and pressing social needs.
